Murray is one of two Big 12 players to be named Maxwell Award semifinalists for this season. Will Grier, West Virginia quarterback, is also a semifinalist for the award, presented annually to college football’s Player of the Year.
The 20 semifinalists include 10 quarterback candidates, including Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, who among with Murray is currently considered a front runner for this year’s Heisman Trophy.
OU’s Baker Mayfield was the Maxwell Award winner last season. Murray is attempting to be the fourth Oklahoma Sooner to win the award. Previous winners were Tommy McDonald (1956), Jason White (2003) and Mayfield (2017).
