Oklahoma football: Fan exodus vs. Iowa State has angered those who stayed

NORMAN — Joshua Walters never leaves Oklahoma football games early. He’s 26, lives in Choctaw and been going to Sooner games with his dad since the John Blake days.

But two weeks ago, with OU leading Iowa State 42-28 and about five minutes left in the game, Walters decided to leave. He doesn’t really know why.

Maybe it was the chill in the air; it was after 10 p.m. as the fourth quarter hit the homestretch. Maybe it was because Walters’ father hadn’t come to the game. But Walters joined about 50,000 other fans who left before Iowa State staged a stirring comeback; the Sooners averted defeat only when Parnell Motley intercepted a two-point conversion pass with 24 seconds left in the game.
