Oklahoma baseball: Pitching coach Skip Johnson named Sooners’ new head coach

After 25 years coaching college baseball in the state of Texas, Johnson joined the Sooner coaching staff this past season. For 10 seasons before that, he served as pitching coach of the Texas Longhorns under longtime head coach Augie Garrido.

Prior to joining the coaching staff at Texas, Johnson spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Navarro College, where he won 45o games.

Johnson’s presence in Norman had an immediate impact and led to a marked improvement in the Sooners’ pitching performance in the 2017 season.

Under Johnson’s guidance, the Oklahoma pitching staff this past season allowed the fewest number of home runs in the Big 12 and ranked fourth in the conference and fourth in OU program history with 531 combined strikeouts.
