'Coach, you have to be committed to it': How OU's Lincoln Riley helped Ed Orgeron and LSU implement the counter play

ATLANTA — When LSU coach Ed Orgeron met Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley at the NFL Draft last spring, he didn’t want to engage in small talk.

Orgeron wanted to pick Riley’s brain — to the benefit of the Tigers.

“I immediately started asking him about his counter because I’ve been enamored with his play and his offense there,” Orgeron said.

Riley was happy to share his knowledge.

On the counter, a running back takes a step one way, or motion with another player in the backfield takes the defense that way, before the ball goes the other as the guard and tackle on one side of the offensive line pull to the other side to block.
