When he arrived at Oklahoma in 1999, no one imagined that he would remain on the job in Norman for as long as he has, including Stoops himself.
This will be Stoops’ 18th season on the Sooner sidelines, which is longer than the legendary Bud Wilkinson and the ever-popular Barry Switzer. Only all-purpose OU head coach Bennie Owen (1905-1929) coached the football Sooners longer than Stoops. Owen also coached the OU basketball and baseball teams.
Wilkinson coached the Sooners for 17 seasons, Switzer was in the post for 16 years. Both delivered three national championships during the head-coaching tenure at Oklahoma.
