The Oklahoma head coach, speaking at a Wednesday press conference and reported by 247Sports.com, said sophomore Cody Thomas would be Baker Mayfield’s backup against Clemson in the national semifinal game in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
Thomas has been the Sooners’ No. 3 quarterback all season behind primary backup Trevor Knight. Knight, however, was recently granted his release to pursue a transfer to another school, which would give him an opportunity to return to a starter’s role in his final season of eligibility.
Because Knight is scheduled to graduate this month, he would be able to play immediately for whichever program he elects to join.
