Bob Stoops barely misses a third Heisman winner in Baker Mayfield

Bob Stoops was in New York on Saturday night for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. He was there as the Sooner coach emeritus, having retired last June, making way for Lincoln Riley to be the head coach when Baker Mayfield won the sixth Sooner Heisman.

Stoops, somewhat sacrificially, stepped aside and handed Riley a fantastic situation.

Had Stoops stayed on, and Mayfield won the Heisman, Stoops would be in an elite class of head coaches. Only three head coaches in college football history have produced at least three Heisman winners. Oh, you could say that Stoops produced this one, too, but you could also say that Riley, even as offensive coordinator, produced Mayfield.
