The 1971 Oklahoma Sooners didn’t pass much. No reason to in the infant days of the wishbone, when defenses had no idea how stop the revived triple option.
But when Jack Mildren did throw, his favorite target was his high school pal, Jon Harrison.
Harrison caught 17 passes for 494 yards and four touchdowns for the ’71 Sooners, including two TD catches in the Game of the Century loss to Nebraska.
Harrison died Saturday at age 70, in his hometown of Abilene, Texas.
Harrison and Mildren were teammates at Abilene Cooper, where Mildren became the nation’s most-ballyhooed high school quarterback.
