Oklahoma Football News: Baker Mayfield granted third year of eligibility effective immediately

In this Oklahoma football news and rumors update, former Texas Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield has been granted a third year of eligibility by the NCAA, effective immediately, per KWTV Sports Director Dean Blevins.

According to NewsOK.com, "sources close to the situation said there have been discussions between OU, Texas Tech and the Big 12 about the possibility of Mayfield retaining a year of eligibility if he doesn't play this season. No decisions have been finalized, but Texas Tech has consistently refused to clear Mayfield to play this season."

2013's Big 12 Freshman of the Year decided to walk-on at Oklahoma in the offseason, but Texas Tech decided to block the transfer. He was denied financial aid and the right to play in 2014 because of Tech's actions, along with losing a year of eligibility due to in-conference transfer rules.

Sources cited by NewsOK.com indicate that Mayfield "is close to receiving a waiver that would allow OU to put him on scholarship retroactive to at least the beginning of the current semester." Stay tuned.
