NBA mid-season coaching changes rarely work

For the Monday Oklahoman, I wrote about Billy Donovan’s job status. To figure out the risk/reward of midseason coaching changes, I went back 50 years and found every coaching change that occurred after the first 10 games of a season and before the final 10 games of a season.

I found 152 such instances. I wrote a little about it in the Donovan column, which you can read here. But I thought the entire chart was interesting. So I’ve grouped all the changes into a variety of categories.

I judged 37 of the 152 changes to have been successful.
