John Mateer's surgery has a major impact on Ohio State players' Heisman chances

In case you missed it, Oklahoma's John Mateer, one of the leading Heisman favorites, is set to have surgery on his right hand, due to an injury he suffered this past weekend in Oklahoma's win over Auburn, according to head coach Brent Venables. The timetable for return, with the "straightforward surgery", according to ESPN's Pete Thamel, is about a month.

Mateer has amassed 1,215 yards in his four games this year, which include a win over then-ranked No. 15 Michigan on September 6th, and this weekend's 24-17 win over No. 22 Auburn. He's thrown for six touchdowns thus far with three interceptions as well, and sat in the top five of many betting sites' Heisman favorites after the performance over Oklahoma's SEC foe this weekend.
