College football | Concussion lawsuits filed against schools, NCAA

College athletics finds itself awash in more litigation as former football players filed six federal lawsuits Tuesday alleging that the NCAA and its member institutions failed to protect them from concussions and other head injuries.

The New York Times reported that former players at Penn State, Auburn, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Oregon and Utah filed the class-action lawsuits, which named Penn State, Vanderbilt, the Big Ten, Southeastern Conference and Pac-12 as defendants.

Ohio State was not named in any of the lawsuits, and none of the players who filed the lawsuits played for the Buckeyes. OSU athletic director Gene Smith declined to comment, as did the Big Ten.
