Instant Reaction: Elliott Powers Ohio State To Title With 42-20 Win Over Oregon

Oregon’s high-powered offense was on display early as they scored on their first drive just 2:39 into the game, but Ohio State took over from that point on and took a 21-10 lead into halftime.

However, they Ducks weren't done. They forced two turnovers on Ohio State's first two drives of the third quarter and managed to cut the score to 21-20, but the Buckeyes countered with three Ezekiel Elliott touchdown runs to regain control and seal the victory.

The win gives Ohio State their eighth national title, the first since 2002.

Turning Point:

Ohio State essentially ended the game early in the fourth quarter when Elliott led a nine-play, 76-yard touchdown drive. His two-yard TD run put the Buckeyes up two scores, a deficit that was too big for Oregon to overcome.

Key Stat:

Oregon’s ineffectiveness on third down was extremely surprising. The Ducks converted on 51.6 percent of third downs coming into the game, but were just 2/12 tonight, which limited their drives and was why they were unable to consistently move the ball down the field. On the flip side, Ohio State went 8/15 on third down.

Red zone efficiency was also a big factor in this one. Oregon scored a touchdown on only one of their four red zone possessions, while Ohio State punched it in on all four of their red zone possessions.

Ohio State MVP:

Elliott couldn't be stopped in this one, rushing for 246 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries. This marks the third straight game he's has rushed for over 200 yards and the fourth straight game he has multiple touchdowns.

Oregon MVP:

Heisman winner Marcus Mariota played well, but didn't get enough help from his teammates. He finished with 333 yards and two touchdowns, along with 39 rushing yards.
