OU cans its highest-paid employee

Ohio University Athletic Director Jim Schaus announced on Wednesday that Saul Phillips, the men’s basketball coach of the last five seasons, will not have his contract renewed.

Coach Phillips went 81-77 in his five years at the helm, including consecutive 20-win seasons in 2015-16 and 2016-17. The two seasons since have been lackluster, finishing 14-17 in both seasons. The Bobcats went just 40-50 in the Mid-American Conference under Phillips.

In Phillips’ first season (2014-15) after the coach came over from North Dakota State University, the Bobcat men won 10 and lost 20 but the team still averaged 6,681 fans in the Convocation Center, the highest attendance in the MAC.
