Yonder Alonso out of A’s lineup with sore knee

HOUSTON - Yonder Alonso was out of Oakland’s starting lineup Thursday after drilling a foul ball off his right knee the night before, but manager Bob Melvin didn’t rule out using him later in the game.

“A little sore, as to be expected,” Melvin said before the A’s game against the Astros. “So I’m not sure if he’s going to be available or not.”

Rookie Matt Olson, like Alonso a superior defensive first baseman, was at the position Sunday.

Melvin said that the team is still in wait-and-see mode with Jharel Cotton for Saturday’s start against the Braves; Cotton left his start at Chicago last week after five-plus innings with a blister.
