Yonder Alonso out of A’s lineup again, bench will be thin

NEW YORK - Yonder Alonso is out of Oakland’s lineup for the first game of the series at Yankee Stadium, still feeling the effects of being hit on the right wrist Tuesday night.

Alonso, who leads the majors with nine homers this month, said that he will do defensive work and try to throw before Friday night’s game, but he will not take regular batting practice. He did hit off a tee Friday and that went OK, he said.

The fact that the first baseman isn’t taking batting practice indicates he’s unlikely to play Friday unless there is an emergency; however, Alonso said it was possible that he would be cleared to be available off the bench.
