Wrist injury turned A’s Marcus Semien into ‘a better hitter’

Marcus Semien is playing with a lot more discomfort than he lets on, other A’s players and coaches believe.

Yet five months after right wrist surgery to repair a fractured scaphoid bone, Oakland’s shortstop has improved offensively. Since the All-Star break, Semien, a career .247 hitter, is batting .270 and his two-run homer Wednesday helped Oakland sweep the Tigers.

“There are some pitches that still aggravate him,” manager Bob Melvin said. “Some of the wrist pain he has, some soreness probably doesn’t go away until after the season with significant rest.

“Marcus is a guy with a significant pain threshold and he wants to play.
