Why Frankie Montas has been kept out of action by A’s

MESA, Ariz. — A’s pitcher Frankie Montas has gone nearly two weeks since his last appearance in a game, and there’s a reason for it.

After making a start against the Padres on March 4, Montas felt his right shoulder tighten up on him. A pitcher who manager Bob Melvin was looking to stretch out as a starter this spring, Montas threw a bullpen session before Friday’s 7-3 win over the Indians in what was his first time throwing since the injury occurred.

While Montas said he was feeling better and anticipated pitching in a game as soon as next week, Melvin said the hard-throwing right-hander will require at least a couple more bullpen sessions before returning to Cactus League action.
