What we learned Thursday at Oakland A’s HQ: A.J. Puk visits specialist for shoulder soreness

MESA, Ariz. — The name Neal ElAttrache will cause shudders for pitchers. The renowned sports orthopedic surgeon’s name has taken on a similar meaning to that of Dr. James Andrews.

A’s starter A.J. Puk, who’s been sidelined since last week with shoulder soreness, visited his Los Angeles office Thursday for a prescheduled meeting, manager Bob Melvin said. But it’s what comes out of that meeting — not the visit — that matters.

“If he comes back and he’s cleared there, then he’s probably on schedule to play in the next couple days,” Melvin said, but cautioned that it is dependent on ElAttrache’s opinion.
