Trevor Plouffe said he’s not much of a one for birthdays, anyway.
That’s just as well: The A’s designated the third baseman for assignment Thursday, the day he turned 31.
“At my age, birthdays aren’t quite as awesome as they used to be,” Plouffe told The Chronicle by phone, chuckling. “But I still had a good birthday even with everything that happened.”
Plouffe spent Friday packing up to head back to Southern California while his future is in limbo. The A’s have 10 days to trade, waive or release Plouffe; Plouffe said his agent had spoken to Oakland’s front office Friday and the team is trying to deal Plouffe if possible.
