The Detroit Tigers are expected to hire Ron Gardenhire as manager, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.

The Tigers, who are replacing Brad Ausmus after four seasons at the helm, tied for the worst record in the majors this year and are rebuilding after trading Justin Verlander, Justin Upton and J.D. Martinez.

Gardenhire, the bench coach this season for the Diamondbacks, is familiar to Tigers fans from his long run managing the AL Central rival Twins from 2002-14. The Twins won the division six times in his first nine seasons in charge.
