The Marcus Semien balance: power vs. on-base percentage

MESA, Ariz. – The A’s would like nothing better than to see Marcus Semien draw more walks this year, boost that on-base percentage and help the club generate more offense.

They just don’t want to do it at the expense of his homers.

The shortstop hit 27 homers last season, the second-best total on the club behind Khris Davis’ 42, while drawing 51 walks. The walk total wasn’t bad, but the A’s believe he can do better.

“I think he has the ability to get better, probably with both,” manager Bob Melvin said. I know 27 homers is a lot of homers, but he has power.
