Teammates, family gather to honor Catfish Hunter at Coliseum

OAKLAND – Family and former teammates of A’s Hall of Fame starting pitcher Jim “Catfish” Hunter gathered at the Coliseum Saturday morning for the naming of the Coliseum’s Gate C after the longtime Oakland pitcher.

Hunter, who died of ALS complications in 1999, was saluted by Joe Rudi, Vida Blue, Ray Fosse, Darold Knowles, John “Blue Moon” Odom, Campy Campaneris and Gene Tenace along with another A’s and Yankees legend, Rickey Henderson.

Hunter’s widow, Helen, who was at the ceremony along with her three adult children and other family members, talked about how much she and her husband loved their time in Oakland and that Hunter never wanted to leave.
