Sonny Gray passes test, will face hitters next in his comeback

KANSAS CITY – Sonny Gray threw on the side before Monday’s game against the Royals and he’s been cleared to advance to the next level of his recovery from this spring’s right lat injury.

Manager Bob Melvin said Gray will throw two sets of 15 pitches each against hitters before Thursday’s final game against Kansas City.

“He threw 35 pitches, but then sat down and got back up and threw a simulated inning,” Melvin said.

The A’s came into the spring figuring Gray, 27, would be their opening day starter. Now they are hoping he’ll be pitching by the end of the month.
