Sonny Gray is ready to begin a minor-league rehab assignment, which might not last long.
Recovering from a lat strain, Gray will start for Class A Stockton on Saturday and throw roughly 65 pitches and go four or five innings.
“This will be a big outing for him,” manager Bob Melvin said. “It puts him on his way, a real game-type situation. Once you get up to that 60-, 65-pitch mark, it means you’re real close hopefully to getting him back here.”
If Gray is good to go, he’d follow up with a final rehab game and throw 75 to 80 pitches.
