Rookie Daniel Gossett makes nice debut in A’s 5-3 loss

MESA, Ariz. – Daniel Gossett got the surprise start Sunday after the news filtered out that Sonny Gray wasn’t going to the World Baseball Classic. Gossett didn’t look surprised at all in what turned out to be a late Oakland 5-3 loss to the Angels.

Oakland had a 2-1 lead after five innings, but saw the Angels tie it in the sixth on an unearned run. The Anaheim crew then took the lead against A’s minor league right-hander Aaron Kurtz on Ryan LaMarre’s two-run single in the seventh.

Kendall Graveman was supposed to start Sunday, but the A’s changed their rotation plans for the week by pushing him back to Monday.
