Phegley put on paternity leave, A’s call up catcher with WBC acclaim

The A’s placed catcher Josh Phegley on the paternity list and are bringing up Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Nashville, the club announced Wednesday.

Lavarnway’s name is familiar to anyone who remembers him starring in Team Israel’s surprising run at the World Baseball Classic in March. He started all six games at catcher and hit .444 (8-for-18) with two doubles, a homer and six RBI en route to Pool A MVP honors.

“I was just trying to feel like me as a player,” Lavarnway said then. “I’ve had some success in the past, and I just tried to keep it rolling.
