It’s been a fairy tale season in many ways for A’s first baseman Yonder Alonso. With his career potentially in jeopardy following a punchless 2016 season, he worked tirelessly in the offseason to completely revamp his swing and reinvent himself as a hitter.
Alonso did it so well he’ll be an American League All-Star Tuesday in Miami, his hometown, where he rose out of an impoverished Cuban neighborhood to save the family once that saved him after his parents defected from Cuba back when he was an 8-year-old boy.
It’s hard to believe there could be a more poignant story at this year’s game.
