On this date, March 29: A’s Charlie Finley uses orange baseballs in spring game

Charlie Finley is at it again.

The A’s owner has long advocated several innovations to enliven the national pastime — a pet mule; a mechanical rabbit that pops out of the ground to dispense baseballs to the home plate umpire; colorful (some might say garish) uniforms; white shoes; the designated pinch-hitter; the designated pinch-runner; mustache day; hot pants day.

The latest brainstorm from the colorful Finley went on display during a spring training game between the A’s and the Indians in Mesa, Arizona.

The game, on March 29, 1973, 47 years ago, was played with orange baseballs, which Finley asserted were more visible than standard baseballs.
