CHICAGO — Bob Geren was fired as the A’s manager Thursday, taking the fall for a season that began with high hopes but has quickly spiraled downward.

Bob Melvin, former manager of the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks, was introduced as interim manager for the rest of this season.

Melvin was in the dugout Thursday night for a 9-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox, which extended the A’s losing streak to 10, their longest skid since a 10-gamer in 2008.
