ANAHEIM - Major League Baseball is investigating Matt Joyce’s use of a homophoblic slur during the A’s game at Anaheim on Friday night, according to two sources.
Joyce, Oakland’s right fielder and leadoff hitter, was overheard by an Associated Press photographer while directing an anti-gay insult at a fan who had been heckling Joyce. Joyce told the Associated Press that the fan had used vulgarities at him. “I fired back and obviously as soon as you fire back, you regret saying anything, because it’s just not worth it,” Joyce said.
Joyce responded to a text from The Chronicle this morning by saying he will speak to reporters at Angel Stadium later today.
