The A’s could thank the left side of their infield for helping them avoid what would have been a particularly exasperating loss Sunday afternoon against the Royals.
Shortstop Marcus Semien preserved an eighth-inning tie with a sparking defensive play, diving to his right to spear Salvador Perez’s sharp grounder and throwing home from his knees to get Whit Merrifield trying to score.
Matt Chapman then led off the bottom of the inning by hammering a Jason Adam fastball into the seats in left field, and the A’s held on for a 3-2 win in the finale of their four-game series at the Coliseum against Kansas City.
