Kurtenbach: It’s time for the A’s to show they mean business by making a big free agent play

The Oakland A’s want to build a new ballpark in downtown Oakland, but they’re not getting much traction.

The team’s was told that its preferred site, near Laney College, is not available. Other options for a downtown ballpark range from implausible to idiotic.

So the A’s are facing two less-than-desirable options for the team, its fans, and the Oakland community: staying at (and possibly refurbishing) the Oakland Coliseum (which isn’t downtown and might be past help when it comes to refurbishment) or leaving Oakland altogether.

I don’t see those two options changing unless the A’s organization gets some serious momentum behind it in the coming months and years.
