TORONTO — After his shot to compete for a spot on the opening day roster was taken away with a freak injury, Josh Phegley is back and ready to prove he belongs.
Phegley and Bruce Maxwell were looking to earn a spot as the team’s backup catcher following the signing of Jonathan Lucroy. But with about two weeks left in spring, Phegley was behind the plate when a foul tip smashed into his right hand, breaking his pinky and ring finger to end his hopes of a roster spot.
“That was just bad luck,” Phegley said. “A couple of broken fingers is not a big deal but the timing of when that happened was just awful.
