It’s double-time for A’s Josh Phegley after simplifying stroke

MINNEAPOLIS - A major change to his approach at the plate has turned backup catcher Josh Phegley into a doubles machine.

On The Chronicle’s A’s Plus podcast, Phegley said that he and hitting coach Darren Bush “just canned my approach,” eliminating as much extra movement as possible.

“You’re always practicing a swing, what’s really hard when you don’t get a lot of at-bats is loading and getting into a good hitting position,” said Phegley, who doubled in the sixth Sunday. “That’s the thing that goes out the door when you don’t play for four or five days.
