How Jonathan Lucroy fared in his first game with the A’s

MESA, Ariz. — Catcher Jonathan Lucroy made his A’s debut Saturday against the Mariners and immediately got a rave review from pitcher Sean Manaea.

“It was awesome. He’s very well prepared and he definitely takes charge. Definitely controls the entire diamond,” Manaea said. “Having a guy like that with the amount of knowledge he has is huge. I’m excited that he’s here and taking control of the pitching staff. It was a lot of fun.”

Lucroy played for six innings, catching Manaea and Yusmeiro Petit before Josh Phegley entered the game as his defensive replacement.

Going 0 for 2 on the day, Lucroy said he did not quite feel up to speed at the plate, but that he should be fine by the time Opening Day comes around.
