How Franklin Barreto is looking to capitalize on everyday opportunity

SAN DIEGO — Next man up. That’s the mentality these A’s have adopted with the inordinate amount of players they have lost to the disabled list.

Matt Chapman became the latest roster casualty as he landed on the DL with a right hand contusion, making Franklin Barreto that next man up. He’s looking to seize the opportunity that’s been presented to him.

Barreto, 22, is considered the top hitting prospect in the A’s organization. Since his major league debut last June, Barreto has been up and down between Oakland and Triple-A Nashville several times. But with A’s manager Bob Melvin moving Jed Lowrie over to third base in the wake of Chapman’s injury, this promotion for Barreto Saturday had a different feel to it.
