The A’s sent rookie shortstop Franklin Barreto back to Triple-A on Saturday.
In a series of moves that have become an almost daily occurrence for the team, the A’s also designated catcher Ryan Lavarnway for assignment to make room on the roster for pitcher Chris Smith and catcher Josh Phegley.
Smith, 36, is scheduled to make his first major league start Saturday at Seattle.
Barreto, 21, the No. 1 prospect in the A’s organization, was recalled from Nashville on June 24 and got four hits in his first two games. Since then, however, he had gone 4 for 32 and was batting .
