Gray set to face hitters Thursday

KANSAS CITY -- A's right-hander Sonny Gray will soon graduate to facing hitters as he continues his rehab from a lat strain.

Gray threw a 35-plus pitch bullpen session without any issues at Kauffman Stadium on Monday morning, prompting A's manager Bob Melvin to announce his next step: Come Thursday, he'll throw two sets of 15 pitches to hitters.

"He's throwing hard down there," Melvin said. "Sometimes it's tough to look like you're throwing 100 percent, and it does with him. The intensity is there with him. He's looking forward to throwing to hitters and, more than anything, looking forward to getting out on a rehab and throwing in games.
