Gray advances to extended spring, could return by May 1

KANSAS CITY – Sonny Gray could be back in the A’s rotation by about May 1 after the starting pitcher cleared another rehabilitation hurdle Thursday with two 15-pitch innings throw on the side before Thursday’s series finale against the Royals.

Manager Bob Melvin and Gray himself were both delighted with the quality of pitches Gray was able to throw, some of them with bench coach Mark Kotsay and bullpen catcher Jeremy Dowdy standing in the batter’s box.

So after Gray came off the mound it was decided that his next work would be three innings and 45 pitches throw in the A’s extended spring training camp in Mesa, Ariz.
