Perhaps the A’s have found the key to unlocking Frankie Montas’ potential at the major-league level: Let him pitch the first inning.
Montas, who struggled with Oakland as a reliever last season, returned as a starter Sunday and held the Diamondbacks to one run in six innings in a 2-1 A’s win at the Coliseum. It was a welcome sight for the A’s, who due to injuries were using their ninth different starting pitcher already this season, tied for second-most in the majors.
