NEW YORK - Once in awhile, the A’s defensive shortcomings don’t hamper the team’s ability to compete.
Sunday was not one of those days. Oakland’s inept fielding denied Andrew Triggs any chance at his sixth win of the year and destroyed the A’s hopes of taking the rubber match of the series. Thanks to two errors, the Yankees scored fivee unearned runs while beating Oakland 9-5, four coming on a two-out grand slam by rookie Aaron Judge in the third.
The inning should have been over before Judge stepped to the plate, but with two on and one out in the third, A’s right fielder Matt Joyce raced toward the corner for a foul ball by Matt Holliday and it went into his glove and plopped back out.
