CLEVELAND - Daniel Mengden earned his first major-league promotion just over a year ago and put together a splendid June, giving up no more than three runs in any of his five starts.

The right-hander never has managed to get back to that level. He struggled drastically last July and again in a September callup. Monday at Cleveland, Mengden made his first start of the season for Oakland and had a tough time of it, allowing seven hits, a walk and five runs in the A’s 5-3 loss to the Indians. Khris Davis hammered his 16th homer of the season in the ninth, tied for second most in the league.
