Daniel Mengden does what no A’s starter had done this spring

MESA, Ariz. — A’s manager Bob Melvin had been hoping for one of his starting pitchers to go deep into a ballgame this spring, and Daniel Mengden finally delivered.

Making his fifth appearance this spring, Mengden became the first A’s starting pitcher to go past five innings in a game this spring in Friday’s 7-3 win over the Indians.

“That was big for us and for him, too,” Melvin said. “We need some guys to go deeper into games for us so we know they’re ready for the season.”

The start to the game wasn’t exactly a sign of good things to come.
