Could touted A’s draft pick choose USC instead?

Related Topics: USC Trojans football, Nick Allen

It’s too early to say if the A’s got a steal by picking highly touted San Diego-area high school shortstop Nick Allen.

He was Oakland’s first pick on the second day of the draft, the A’s third round selection and the 81st player taken overall.

Therein lies the problem. The Francis Parker High star was projected my some scouting services as the 29th-best player available. He has signed to play college baseball at USC, and not being picked in the first round may convince him to join the Trojans rather than the A’s.

Allen is 5-foot-9, 170 pounds and scouts can’t stop raving about his glove.
