Bruce Maxwell’s Impact on Major League Baseball

For the first time since Colin Kaepernick knelt during the National Anthem, a professional baseball player has protested against racial inequality in America. And his name is Bruce Maxwell.

Left fielder and first baseman Mark Cahna, in support of the protest, placed his hand on Maxwell’s shoulder, and embraced after the national anthem had ceased. This act caused the Athletics to release a statement, which said “The Oakland A’s pride ourselves on being inclusive. We respect and support all of our players’ constitutional rights and freedom of expression.”

The club’s backing of the protest could spark other major league players to protest the following day.
