Bob Melvin explains ‘tough’ decision on Kendall Graveman

HOUSTON — The decision to option Kendall Graveman down to Triple-A Nashville was not an easy one.

Pegged as leader of a young A’s starting rotation back in spring and expected to provide consistency every five days, Graveman’s struggles on the mound made it tough to keep him in the majors. Having decided undergo an overhaul in his delivery and looking to add to his repertoire of pitches to bring more variety than his usual heavy fastball-sinker output, the A’s decided it would be best for Graveman to perfect that new approach in the minors.
