OAKLAND — The A’s found a taker for Wilmer Font.
After designating Font for assignment Wednesday afternoon, the A’s found a destination for the right-handed pitcher just before Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Peter Bayer.
The A’s had originally acquired Font last month in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. A hard-throwing right-hander whose fastball reached up to 98 mph, the A’s had hoped to unlock the potential they saw in Font. But in four relief appearances with Oakland, Font surrendered five home runs and was roughed up for a 14.
