MESA, Ariz. - Mark Canha in center field, coming soon.
Manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday morning at Hohokam Stadium that the first baseman-corner outfielder will play center in one of Oakland’s upcoming games.
Canha never has played center at the professional level; he has more experience at catcher (one game at Class-A). But he’s a good athlete who runs well - presumably, the A’s want to find out if they could use him there in the event of an injury.
Or, if Canha appears competent at the position, the potential arises for the team to go with four outfielders on the Opening Day roster, with Canha backing up everyday center fielder Rajai Davis.
