The 24-year-old was a first-round Draft pick of the A's in 2014 out of Cal State Fullerton. He's since amassed 80 homers in 317 Minor League games, all the while flashing Gold Glove-caliber defense at third.

Chapman's arrival sends a strong message that the A's, who have an American League-worst 27-38 record, are looking to the future. This means veteran Trevor Plouffe, hitting just .215, is a candidate to be designated for assignment.

The news of Chapman's promotion was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
